Theoretical Containers

Parcel carriers rate containers.

If you want to rate shop before you have any containers, you must create theoretical containers that mimic future containers to figure rates.

This allows you to simulate rates from the Rate Route Workbench or a sales order that you would receive at the pack station if you had actual containers.

You can then compare these estimated rates to help you make a decision on how to ship your containers.

Configuration Options

You can use theoretical containers two different ways: container weight vs shipment lines.

Container Weight

Enter a value in the Theoretical container field on the Shipping Carriers form.

The system takes the total weight of the shipment and divides it into containers of your specified size.

The system will then rate these containers to get your estimate.

Example

You have a 62-lb shipment.

You enter 15 in the Theoretical container field so that the system breaks down your shipment into 15-lb containers.

The system will rate these containers (62/15 = 4 15-lb containers and 1 2-lb container) to get your estimate on the Rate Route Workbench.

Shipment Lines

Turn on the Use SCC Theoretical Containers toggle on the Shipping Carriers form.

The system will override anything set in the Theoretical container field on this form and instead use the rate shop container set up in Supply Chain Cloud.

This configuration uses shipment lines and theoretically packs them into containers based on those settings.

Important

Some carriers require dimensions for theoretical containers so must be used with the Shipment Lines option:

  • Australia Post
  • DHL
  • USPS
