Hazardous Materials
Hazardous materials functionality is available for FedEx and UPS.
FedEx Note
- This is a Beta feature. It has been tested against IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations only. It has not been tested against CFR or ADR regulations.
- The FedEx Hazardous Materials feature does not support Process Shipment MPS (manifest by shipment with multiple packages). You will see an error message: “Hazardous materials cannot be specified with Process Shipment MPS.”
UPS Note
- This feature has been tested against CFR regulations only. It has not been tested against ADR or IATA regulations.
Enable the Feature
You must enable the Hazardous materials product information and shipping documentation feature.
- Go into Feature management and select Check for Updates.
- The Hazardous materials product information and shipping documentation feature should now be available.
Enable the feature.

Hazardous material regulation
The hazardous material regulation classifies how you plan to transport the materials.
The Mode of delivery and Country sections are used to determine which regulation set will be used.
Regulation Codes:
- ADR: Europe to Europe ground movement
- CFR: Hazardous materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation within the United States or ground shipments to Canada
- IATA: Worldwide air movement
- TDG : Canada to Canada ground movement or Canada to United States standard movement
Valid regulation codes for FedEx:
- ADR
- DOT (CFR)
- IATA
See the FedEx HazMat Shipping Guide for more information on FedEx regulation codes.
Valid regulation codes for UPS:
- ADR
- CFR
- IATA
- TDG
See Dangerous Goods for more information on UPS regulations codes.
Hazardous material classification group
The classification group code defines how a hazardous material will be shipped.
Group codes can vary based on the identification number and the shipping exceptions related to that identification number.
See Part 173 of the e-CFR for more information on how to classify items you are shipping.
For UPS, you need to set the four values UPS expects as group codes:
- EQ: Excepted Quantity
- FR: Fully Regulated
- LQ: Limited Quantity
- LR: Lightly Regulated
Hazardous material class
All hazardous materials are assigned a class code.
The nine standardized class codes are defined in e-CFR 172.101:
- Class 1: Explosives
- Class 2: Gases
- Class 3: Flammable and Combustible Liquids
- Class 4: Flammable Solids
- Class 5: Oxidizing Substances and Organic Peroxides
- Class 6: Toxic Substances and Infectious Substances
- Class 7: Radioactive Materials
- Class 8: Corrosives
- Class 9: Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials
Supply Chain Cloud passes the class code.
Hazardous material division
Some of the hazard classes are further separated into divisions based on their physical or chemical properties.
See DOT Hazard Classes and Postal Mailability for more information on hazardous material divisions and classes.
Supply Chain Cloud passes the division code.
Hazardous material identification
Hazardous materials are assigned an identification number. These numbers begin with UN, NA, or ID.
Supply Chain Cloud uses the Identification field to represent the UN number.
Important
We recommend checking your carrier's requirements as some require the prefix here and some do not.
Note
UN numbers are four-digit numbers that identify hazardous materials.
Hazardous material packing group
Packing groups are an IATA-required value.
If you plan on shipping with an IATA regulation code, you must configure a packing group.
Valid values:
- Default
- I: "High Danger" materials
- II: "Medium Danger" materials
- III: "Low Danger" materials
Find the packing group for your material on the UN Dangerous Goods List.
If no packing group is configured, the program selects Default.
Hazardous material label
Supply Chain Cloud passes the material label.
The carrier may require a specific package label depending on the material being shipped.
Use this form to configure the needed labels.
Product information management > Products > Released products
In the Manage inventory section, turn on the Hazardous material toggle.
In the Buy/Trade section, enter the Default regulation code you want to associate with your item in Supply Chain Cloud.
On the Manage inventory ribbon, click Item Hazardous Material.
You can now configure your Material management settings using your completed module configurations (see above).
Note
Select an option for Lithium Battery:
- None: Material is classified as hazardous.
- Battery: Material is considered a non-hazardous battery.
- Hazardous Material Battery: Material is classified as a hazardous battery.
This is supported for FedEx only.
UPS
When using hazardous materials with UPS, there are two additional fields.
Group Code
Enter one of the four UPS group codes:
- EQ: Excepted Quantity
- FR: Fully Regulated
- LQ: Limited Quantity
- LR: Lightly Regulated
These need to be set up on the Hazardous material classification group form first to be available for selection.
Transportation Mode
There are four options for you to choose from:
- Highway
- Ground
- Passenger Aircraft
- Cargo Aircraft Only
This field defaults to Highway.
Note
FedEx ignores this field.
